Operation Iranian Liberty (Part 1)

In his State of the Union address, the President told the Iranian people "As you stand for your liberty, America stands with you."

This & subsequent posts will examine why & how the civilized world should help the Iranian people achive liberty. In line with the President's promise, I'm calling this help "Operation Iranian Liberty".

In this post I'm focusing on why the Iranian regime is evil and has to be destroyed. In subsequent posts I'll look at the options for achieving this (which do not incidentally involve an Iraqi Freedom style invasion).

For an insight into the Iranian regime, look at an article in the London Daily Telegraph (free registration required, search for the author Alasdair Palmer & date December 19 2004).

Under Iran's 'divinely ordained justice', girls as young as nine are charged with 'moral crimes'. The best that they can hope for is to die by hanging

According to Amnesty International, an Iranian girl or woman convicted of "acts incompatible with chastity" is killed.

The lucky ones are hanged from a crane in the main square of their town. In one case the trial judge put the noose around a child's neck himself. He was pleased to do it, saying "Society has to be kept safe from acts against public morality". He ordered that her body be left hanging from the crane for several hours so people could see what happened to teenagers who "committed acts incompatible with chastity".

The unlucky ones are stoned to death:

The Iranian Penal Code states that women should be buried up to their breasts before being stoned. Article 104 is specific about the type of stones that should be used when a woman is to be punished for adultery. They "should not be large enough to kill the woman by one or two strikes, nor should they be so small that they could not be defined as stones". (The victim dies) slowly, in agony, buried in sand, as officials lob correctly sized stones at her head.

But, the article reports, there are many decent and brave Iranians:

Many Iranians are revolted by the brutality and injustice of their judges' attitude to children. (One) extremely brave lawyer who represents (one child's) family, has filed a suit against the judiciary for wrongful execution, and is preparing a murder charge against the judge who hanged her.

So, the Iranian regime is barbaric & evil and revolts the Iranian people. However it will will soon be in a position to move up from torturing kids to nuking cities. So we have to figure out how to help the Iranian people remove it.
