Viva L'Italia

Italy has many problems, but its the most civilized nation in the world.

Thu Nov 3

ROME (AFP) - Around 10,000 Italians, most waving Israeli flags, demonstrated peacefully outside Iran's embassy in Rome to protest President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's recent call for Israel to be "wiped off the map".

Dozens of parliamentary deputies and senators from government and opposition parties participated in the torchlight protest along with Jewish groups, but Italy's foreign and defence ministers belatedly pulled out over fears their presence would further escalate a diplomatic rift with Tehran.

I can't find any similar demonstrations elsewhere in Europe or in the US.

Which is why - in spite of Italy's economic problems, falling population, immigration problems, lousy banks and awful bureaucracy - we're looking for a house there. Biggest problem is to find a part not full of Brits and Germans. I like the Veneto, but the fragrant Mrs G thinks it'll be too cold. We're visiting in a couple of weeks to find out (blogging will continue, they have good communications).
