The US should block the Franco-Iranian plan for a UN "peacekeeping" force in Lebanon - it'll just enable Israel's enemies to re-arm for their next attack.
Their agenda is clear:
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Thursday the solution to the Middle East crisis is to destroy Israel. To help things along, two nations are mobilizing for the UN force:
In a speech during an emergency meeting of Muslim leaders, Ahmadinejad also called for an immediate halt to fighting in Lebanon between Israel and the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah.
Malaysia plans to send 1,000 soldiers for peacekeeping in Lebanon as soon as a cease-fire is declared in the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, the national news agency reported. And yesterday the AP showed Indonesian APCs mustering for this force. One small problem (my ellipsis):
...Indonesia and Malaysia (have)...predominantly Muslim populations (and) have refused to consider diplomatic relations with Israel...
Keeping Hezbollah and Iran from creeping back needs:
...several divisions worth of battle-tested troops (some experts put the number at 25,000). The soldiers would need heavy equipment, intelligence capabilities, air support and artillery: things most previous missions in the region were never given, making them too easy to brush aside.
They'd also need robust rules of engagement and authorization under the U.N. Charter's Chapter VII, which would let them go after Hezbollah if necessary and would prevent their premature withdrawal. To stay the course, they'd also need a stomach for casualties, since no foreign force has ever escaped Lebanon unbloodied. And they should be preceded by a cease-fire signed by all interested parties and approved by the Arab League, which would legitimize the action and allow diplomatic pressure to be applied on Damascus and Tehran.
But this won't happen - the Muslims won't buy it and Europe's anti-Semites won't let their soldiers die protecting Jews.
So the US should stand firm and let the Israelis finish the job. And Israelis must accept that their occupying Southern Lebanon - and taking casualties - is the least bad solution.
If the US blinks and follows the Franco/Iranian plan - as some news reports suggest - the Israelis will have to greatly increase and disperse their nukes, build more robust missile defenses, and take out Iran's leadership and nuke program before the Russians have installed their new air defenses.
Indeed, whatever now happens, Israel has to do the above for its own survival.
So maybe a motley crew of Franco-Iranian sponsored rapists sunning themsleves in Lebanon isn't a big deal.
